Downtown
Looking North into downtown Atmore from the Frisco overpass, a CSX
freight train passes on it's way to Mobile, AL. This small town is
in the middle of a busy mainline and an important connection.
Departure
Amtrak engine 351 departs for Mobile, AL on the former L&N.
The connection to the Frisco (BN) Memphis-Pensacola line is
to the left.
Passing
Just leaving town, the Amtrak consist passes the new southbound
connection with the Frisco.
Visitor
Many through trains travel from New Orleans as far as Pensacola.
You never know what will be coming in either direction. The
original northbound connection to the Frisco is on the right. The
Frisco overpass can be seen in the background.
Cut Off
The Frisco line is now abandoned and the overpass approach cut off
in favor of trackage rights on CSX's L&N Pensacola line. Ironically
the abandoned section was the only part of the line that was in
good condition!
Southbound
The new southbound connection to Mobile can be seen cutting through
what was the overpass approach. The need for the new connection came
when BN also abandoned it's Memphis-Mobile line. All BN trains from
this point East or West travel by way of CSX. The coal in this train,
bound for Mobile, may have come from the Feather River area.
Northbound
Coming very slowly down the former Frisco Memphis-Pensacola line,
this BN freight train on it's way south to Pensacola will take a short
detour North on the L&N to Flomaton, AL then back on its way South.
This line was in very poor condition last time I was here. Top speed
was 30 mph. What a long ride!
